1.) What are acoustic emissions?

Acoustic emissions generally occur in all systems or objects that are themselves in motion or contain moving parts. If acoustic emissions propagate in solids, they are referred to as structure-borne sound or vibration. This represents sound which propagates in the solid body in form of longitudinal and transverse waves. The coupling of these two types of waves results in bending waves on surfaces. These can be ideally captured with the right technology.

2.) Why should acoustic emissions be measured?

Acoustic emissions occur both during normal operation of a system as well as due to damage. The vibrations have different characteristics depending on their origin. The detection of the vibrations allows both the measurement of a basic condition and the identification of possible damages. Thereby, each possible damage leads to a different sound pattern. The characteristics and properties of the iNDTact sensors allow a wide range of applications on various types of equipment, machines or objects. Their application allows the conversion of structure-borne sound signals into usable data, which in turn enable the customer to perform analyses, planning and condition assessment.

3.) How can I measure acoustic emissions with iNDTact technology?

Due to the extremely compact design of the iNDTact sensors, they can be installed directly at the desired location on the object to be monitored. Due to the direct application of the sensor on the surface and its highly sensitive and broadband technology, all acoustic elements can be detected with the ultimate precision. On the one hand, this allows the detection of damage or changes in condition and on the other hand, it allows the differentiation of different defects from each other.

4.) How does iNDTact monitor the condition based on acoustic emissions?

The mere recording of vibrations is not yet sufficient for successful condition monitoring. Just as important as the recording of all acoustic elements is their processing and analysis.
